Chris Roden Evaluation
Chris Roden Unit 3 Evaluation
I think i have great ability to work independently more than i would in a large team, i could get more of the first drafts designs and layout done for the magazine working on my own then taking group criticism afterwards. I would also say that i work well in groups of two or three in the team, an example of this would be during the photoshoot for our magazine when there was two of us taking the photos, this way we could get a different perspective of photos which would work well in the magazine. The deadlines that we set ourselves where met apart from one which was a problem with the booking of the room for our photography, we ended up doing our photos a week after we had set ourselves the deadline, also to reach our final deadline we had to speed up the pace of the work during the lessons and also outside of the lesson in my free time. Our time management was fine, we got everything done on time. There was also a lack of organization in the group and independently, where we were saving everything in the group so we could access the same piece, and what we were doing everyday. A big problem of the group was communication at the start as everyone was contributing their ideas on what to do and how they are going to do it, We sorted this problem by assorting members of the group more authority than the others.
Our magazine front cover has been influenced by alot of professional magazines which are very sucessful, however ours still lakcs the final professional touch which could make our good magazine, great. we use alot of the same codes and conventions of the professional magazines such as having a single celebrity on the front cover with their name in big stand out font across the magazine. A font that stretchs the magazines name across the front. we have used a smaller and different font for the smaller cover lines going down the side which has been influenced by the professional magazines. but what makes our magazine different would have to be the colour code and the image. what we had noticed after we had finished our final draft and put our magazine side by side with a professional magazine was that the image that they used was dull and with not alot of contrast, where as ours uses alot of contrast with black and white, which doesnt always work. a convention that would have to be on every magazine would be a barcode, the reason we dont have one on our front cover is because we have made a sleeve for our magazine to be placed in which would include some of the conventions needed for a magazine.
at the start of our planning, we disscussed that what we where going to do was create a multi-music genre magazine, the reason behind this was so that we could have a wider target audience and so we are not just specifically looking at one type of genre and because within the group everyone had their own specific type of music which they could bring to the magazine. we tryed to keep the magazine as multi genre as we can, for example the artist in the photo on the front cover is a rap artist, but we kept him in more neutral street clothes to appeal more to everyone than it would if he was in more sterotypical clothing for his genre.
throughout the process of making our magaizne we had all learnt new techniques within photoshop and also within layout for magazines, an example would be, what makes a magazines sell? and it would be that you use different techniques that your traget audience will be atrracted to, such as using the rule of thrids because as audience we like thirds than anything else. we used alot of different techniques in photoshop, cropping an object away from the background behind them. personally i knew alot about photoshop before the task which gave me an advantage over the group, this is why i got the role of layout design.
the overall outcome of the magazine is that it has turned out really well and to a standard that we all feel comfortable with, however if we had more time we could push the standard of the magazine to a near professional level. we all worked well in the group overall and we all had finsihed our designated roles by the end of the project.
Looking at our front cover, there is improvements that could be made to bring our magazine to the professional level of the other magazines. one main improvement that could be done that would bring our magazine into the professional level would be the editing of the photo, our photo has too much contrast whilst as you look at the magazine cover on the left the contrast and colours are just on. A similar convention of the magazines would be the main cover line stands out more than the other cover lines, mainly with size and colour. another convention our magazine follows would be the masthead, it is located at the top of the magazine and stands out the most against any of the pictures or texts, mainly because of its size. another improvement of our magazine would be the size of the coverlines, comparing them against the other two magazines ours stand out too much against the background of the magazine whilst as the others are smaller and draw you in to read them. What we have also done that is similar to the professional product would be the colour codes that i have used throughout the magazine, and so have they with the front cover. Overall our magazine has professional aspects to it but if we had more time and more resources we could make improvements to put it to the standard of the other two magazines.
We had not included a lot of the main conventions to the front cover of the magazine as this issue has a sleeve cover to go with it which would include most of the regular conventions such as the barcode and other information.
During our planning stage we originally proposed that we would design an mixed genre magazine that included most popular bands/ artists and included upcoming artists from any genre so we could target a wide range of audience without it having a disjointed feeling. I think we have done a good job overall in our magazine sticking to the basis of the plan.
